Germany's Alex Cejka fired a bogey-free opening round of 64 to lead the Verizon Heritage at Hilton Head Island in South Carolina, USA.

Cejka stood alone at the top of the leaderboard on seven under, one clear of American Lee Janzen with South African Trevor Immelman on five under.

England's Greg Owen was the leading Briton on two under, with Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy on one over.

Brian Davis was also one over, one ahead of Luke Donald and Paul Casey.

Cejka, who needed surgery in September to correct a pinched nerve and required three months off, enjoyed his best performance since a 64 at the Canadian Open in 2007.

The German capped his round with a 47-foot putt for birdie on the tricky par-3 17th.
