Rory McIlroy won his first round match in Arizona

Rory McIlroy is through to the second round of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship in Arizona after beating Louis Oosthuizen 2&1 on Wednesday.

McIlroy took control after winning the eighth and ninth holes and he stayed ahead, winning the game on the 17th.

McIlroy will now face American Hunter Mahan, who beat Mike Weir 1-up.

Graeme McDowell lost 3&1 to former US Masters winner Zach Johnson while Padraig Harrington suffered an upset first-round loss to American Pat Perez.

McDowell's match was all-square until Johnson won three holes from the seventh to the 11th.

South African player Oosthuizen won the 12th hole to leave McIlroy just 1-up but the teenager hit back at the next to restore a two-hole advantage.
