Sergio Garcia will be making his debut at the event |
Spaniard Sergio Garcia has set his sights on a home victory at the Castello Masters. Europe's top three of Robert Karlsson, Padraig Harrington and Lee Westwood may be missing at Costa Azahar. But Garcia is part of a strong entry list that also includes Ryder Cup team-mates Justin Rose, Paul Casey and Henrik Stenson. "This week I will be giving 120%, not just off the course but on it as well," said 28-year-old Garcia. | We've tried to make the course more competitive, lengthening a few tees, putting in two new lakes and more bunkering on the 10th |
The world number five, is making his debut at his home course near Valencia and has been heavily involved in the planning for the event. "We've tried to make the course more competitive, lengthening a few tees, putting in two new lakes and more bunkering on the 10th," Garcia said. Karlsson, Harrington and Westwood have all chosen to rest rest ahead of next week's season-ending European Tour event, the Volvo Masters in Valderrama. "I didn't consider changing my schedule," said Karlsson, who is now up to number six in the world rankings. "I had a couple of little niggles going on (last week) and a week off to get fully fit for Valderrama is a better idea." Jose Maria Olazabal, who holds the course record of 61, is also part of the entry list, however, along with last week's Portugal Masters winner Alvaro Quiros and Colombian Camilo Villegas, who has been a big hit on the USA PGA tour this season. For many players the tournament offers a last chance to secure a place in the top 115 on the Order of Merit and thereby retain their tour cards for next season. Others, however, have their sights on a place in the top 60, which would earn them entry at Valderrama next week. Places in the top 30, meanwhile, will secure a berth in next year's Open Championship at Turnberry and the top 15 for a spot in the US Open Championship are also up for grabs. Meanwhile, Villegas has said he may consider playing on both the US and European Tours next season. "Yes, it's crossed my mind," he said. "I like playing around the world and Europe seems a good spot. I am going to be playing a little bit more overseas so we'll see what happens." Villegas also admitted that the European Tour's richest season, 'the Race to Dubai' was proving to be a strong lure. World number two Phil Mickelson and world number three Vijay Singh have already expressed their interest in playing some part in next season's European Tour. "That's (the Race to Dubai) going to catch a lot players' attention and it will be nice to see some of the U.S. Tour guys come across the pond," added Villegas.
