Ian Woosnam is a favourite to captain Europe for the second time |
Tony Jacklin believes Ian Woosnam would be the ideal captain to lead Europe into the 2010 Ryder Cup at the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport, Wales. After Europe lost 16-11 to USA in Kentucky last weekend, Jacklin sees the Welshman and Jose Maria Olazabal as the two favourites to replace Nick Faldo. "As soon as the Ryder Cup was announced in Wales he (Woosnam) was the captain that rushed to mind," said Jacklin. "He would be a good captain in his own country." Faldo has refusing to rule himself out of the running to lead the side in the event at Celtic Manor in two years time. But with Faldo being criticised in many quarters for his tactics in being the first European captain to lose to USA since 1999, Jacklin also sees Olazabal as a possible skipper. | 606: DEBATE |
"There are a few hats in the ring and obviously Olazabal is right for it and being at Nick's side he may be the one," added Jacklin, who played in the tournament seven times and captained Europe on four occasions. However, Olazabal - Faldo's vice-captain at Valhalla - has said he would rather play in the next Ryder Cup than take over the reins if he can regain his fitness after a back injury. The captaincy is due to be discussed formally by European officials at a meeting in the United Arab Emirates in January. Woosnam has expressed an interest in the 2010 job at the Welsh venue if the players want him back, after he led Europe to a resounding success at the K Club in Ireland two years ago. If Woosnam is given the 2010 nod, Olazabal could be installed as captain at Medinah, near Chicago, in 2012. That would leave the way clear for Colin Montgomerie to potentially captain Europe at the 2014 event, to be held at Gleneagles in Scotland.
