Montgomerie is targeting a return in Wales in 2010
Colin Montgomerie has vowed to regain his Ryder Cup place after being omitted from captain Nick Faldo's European team for this month's event in Valhalla.
The Scot, who has slipped to 93 in the world, missed out on a wildcard and a chance to play in a ninth Ryder Cup.
"I do feel I have not played my last Ryder Cup," Montgomerie, 45, said. "But I have to get my consistent game back.
"It will be harder next time, so I have to raise the bar as well. But I am determined to do that."
With an automatic place out of the question for Montgomerie, who has endured an up-and-down season, the Scot was relying on Faldo's two wildcards to take him to Kentucky.
But his former Ryder Cup team-mate chose to give those picks to England's Paul Casey and Ian Poulter.
"Always you hope you might get picked because we all know what credentials I can bring to the Ryder Cup," said Montgomerie.
"But I think I was even fourth or fifth on the list."
When asked if he thought Faldo did not want old hands like himself and Darren Clarke, who was also left out of the team, in the dressing-room, Montgomerie said: "I don't think that was in his thoughts.
"I think he picked the two players he thought would get the most points. Let's hope they do.
"I would not say it's going to be punishment watching them. I will look forward to it - to see how people react and to learn how I might do it in the future."
