Vijay Singh hit a birdie on the second extra hole to claim his win |
Vijay Singh won a three-way play-off with Sergio Garcia and Kevin Sutherland to take top prize in the Barclays Classic at the Ridgewood Country Club. Sutherland led going into the final stretch but both Singh and Garcia birdied the 17th to ensure all three finished on eight under in New Jersey. Fijian Singh sealed victory on the second extra hole with a birdie. Britain's Paul Casey, joint second overnight, hit a one above par 72 to finish joint seventh on one over. American Sutherland fell out of contention on the first play-off hole when he drove into the rough and hit a wayward second shot. Garcia seemed to be on his way to victory when he sunk a 25ft putt for a birdie but Singh holed one from even further out. On the par-five second extra hole, Garcia drove off the fairway and hit his second shot behind a tree, while Singh powered on to the green in two. Garcia was given a free drop and still got close to the green but had left himself too much to do and narrowly missed a birdie chip from short of the green. | Unfortunately somebody just seems to be able to come up with some spectacular playing when I'm out there on top |
Singh hit his third birdie in four holes to make sure of the title and deny his Spanish rival. "I think the most important thing about it is that I keep putting myself in a good position, and unfortunately somebody just seems to be able to come up with some spectacular playing when I'm out there on top," said Garcia, who was pipped to the USPGA title by Padraig Harrington. Garcia moved to second place in the FedEx Cup points standings, behind Singh, ahead of this Friday's Deutsche Bank Championship at TPC Boston. With only the top 70 in the standings advancing from the second FedEx Cup play-off to the third, the BMW Championship, Garcia is set fair to advance to the finale, the 30-man Tour Championship. "I'm looking forward to keeping moving in the right direction, keep giving myself chances in the next two weeks, and then get ready for the Ryder Cup and see if we can have a good Tour Championship and at least have a chance at winning the FedExCup," said Garcia.
