Pettersson wrapped up victory with a late flurry of birdies |
Carl Pettersson finished with three birdies to win the Wyndham Championship by two strokes in North Carolina. The Swede held off the challenge of American Scott McCarron, who matched Petterson's round of 68 to finish second on 19 under par. Rich Beem hit a superb 63 to finish third on 17 under par. However, the round of the day belonged to JJ Henry, who shot a stunning eight-under 62 to finish fourth on 16 under with Scotland's Martin Laird. Laird could have joined Beem in third spot had a bogey at the last not cost him the chance of matching Henry's round of 62. Pettersson hopes his victory in Greensboro might persuade European captain Nick Faldo to consider him for a wildcard pick for next month's Ryder Cup in Kentucky. Pettersson left Sweden for England at the age of 10, and moved to Greensboro at 15 when his Volvo executive father was transferred to the city. He admits to feeling more American than European but would love to play for Europe. "I know I'm Swedish but I really feel American," he said. "But my heritage is European and I would love to play on Nick's team. "I might be a little different but I'm going to be playing hard for Europe if I make that team."
