Singh will not be adding to his three major titles this weekend |
Several top names missed the cut, which fell at nine over, after two tough rounds at the Open at Royal Birkdale. Five-time champion Tom Watson finished 10 over, as did Paul Lawrie, the last British winner in 1999, while Vijay Singh shot a 71 but ended 11 over. Mark O'Meara, 1998 Open champion, also finished 11 over, while John Daly was 29 over after a second round of 89. Argentine Angel Cabrera, the 2007 US Open champion, ended finish 14 over, as did Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez. | 606: DEBATE |
Jimenez was well placed after an opening round of 72 but fell short of par on 11 holes on Friday to card an 82. Former US Open champion, and world number three, Geoff Ogilvy also missed the cut after finishing 11 over after his two rounds. Mark Calcavecchia, who won the Open at Troon in 1989, shot 76 on Friday to also finish 11 over. With Sandy Lyle withdrawing on Friday, it means that six former Open champions missed the cut. But former major champions Ernie Els and Davis Love III and Lee Westwood were among a host of players who sneaked in after ending on nine over. Scotland's Colin Montgomerie appeared in danger of missing out after two double bogeys and a triple bogey in the first six holes but recovered to shoot a 75 finish at eight over par.
