Woosnam pocketed 56,500 for winning in Moscow |
Ian Woosnam completed an eastern European double on Sunday by adding the Russian seniors Open crown to the Polish title he won recently. The Welshman added a final round 70 to two earlier efforts of 67 to finish three ahead of Paraguay's Angel Franco. Victory brought Woosnam a 56,500 prize at Moscow's Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club. Scotland's Bill Longmuir finished third, four shots behind Woosnam while Englishman Jeff Hall a further shot adrift of the winner. Woosnam started the day two shots ahead of Longmuir but lost that advantage when the Scot birdied two of the first three holes. The 2006 Ryder Cup Captain then staged a recovery with birdies on the sixth, ninth and 12t. But he dropped a shot on the 14th before sealing the 46th victory of his long and illustrious career with a birdie two on the short 17th. "I feel as if I've been drowned," joked a drenched Woosnam after coping with torrential rain in Russia. "It was so wet I'm surprised we managed to finish. "It rained from start to finish and it's so difficult to control the ball when it gets as wet as that. "It's great to get a win so soon after the last one but at the moment what I want most is to change into some dry clothes."
