Ernie Els will reunite with caddie Ricci Roberts, the man who was by his side during his three major victories, for next month's Open Championship.

The South African ended his 18-month partnership with Irishman JP Fitzgerald after a disappointing 14th-place finish in the US Open earlier this month.

In the absence of the injured Tiger Woods, the world number five is one of the favourites for Royal Birkdale.

Els said: "I have to be pretty happy with where I am and where my game is."

I have to work on my putting, but I don't see that as being a long-term problem

Els will be back with Roberts, with whom he won the Open in 2002 and the US Open in 1994 and 1997, at the Scottish Open in Loch Lomond in a fortnight.

Despite a disappointing finish at the US Open, the former world number one was upbeat ahead of an event he described as his favourite tournament.

"The US Open was quite a step forward for me," Els, whose last major win was at the Open in Muirfield six years ago, told his website.

"It wasn't the way I wanted to finish the tournament, obviously, but on the whole I played beautifully all week.

"I didn't make a putt all through the tournament and that was frustrating. I mean, I played '68 golf' in the final round, but ended up shooting a 73 because I couldn't get a putt to fall.

"But I don't want to dwell on the few negatives. I was happy with my swing and I was happy with the way I hit the ball. I can take a lot of positives from that.

"I have to work on my putting, but I don't see that as being a long-term problem. I'm confident I'll sort it out soon enough."
