Kaymer is the first home winner of the BMW International |
Germany's Martin Kaymer survived a final-round collapse to win the BMW International Open in Munich with a play-off victory over Anders Hansen. The 23-year-old led by six shots going into the last day but he struggled in the final round, even carding a triple-bogey eight at the 11th. He needed a birdie at the 18th to match Hansen's target of 15 under. And on the first extra hole, a birdie four from Kaymer was enough for victory after Hansen found two bunkers. The win moves Kaymer up to sixth place in the European Ryder Cup standings. England's Paul Casey, John Bickerton and Mark Foster tied for third on 13 under, just two shots off the leading duo. It is Casey's best finish of the season while Bickerton would have equalled the Tour record by making up a 10-stroke deficit, but a 67 meant he ended up just short. Colin Montgomerie ended up on eight under and his 16th place was his best stroke play result since January. Kaymer, who won the Abu Dhabi Championship earlier in the season, missed practice to be with his seriously ill mother and she was the first thing on his mind after the victory. | 606: DEBATE | "I just kept fighting, not only for me but for my mother," he said. "Six shots is a lot, but it does not feel like that. I struggled a little bit and made a big mistake on the 11th. "I thought I would make it easy with a five-iron, but got a little loft on the ball. I didn't keep my patience, but I will know for next time and I kept fighting." Despite being in complete control after the third round, Kaymer's nerves showed on the front nine on the final day and he went out in 38. His advantage was wiped out on the 11th when he twice found the lake while Hansen produced three birdies in four holes from the eighth to overtake Kaymer. The German needed to eagle the last to win outright but saw his attempt from 40ft slide just past the cup. Hansen, 37, playing in his first event after knee surgery less than a month ago, was immediately on the back foot in the play-off when he twice found sand while Kaymer was on the green in two. Kaymer missed with his eagle putt but a birdie was enough for victory with Hansen failing to make par.
