Singh tied for 25th on his Masters debut at Augusta this year |
India's Jeev Milkha Singh captured his third European Tour title with a one-shot victory over Simon Wakefield in the Austria Open in Vienna. The 36-year-old, four shots ahead overnight in the 54-hole event shortened by rain, parred all 18 holes. Wakefield birdied three of the last four holes to finish at 14-under. Darren Clarke, battling for ranking points to qualify for The Open next month, had five birdies on the back nine for a closing 65, to share 19th. Another Northern Ireland player, Graeme McDowell, moved to within two shots of the lead but bogeyed the final two holes. He three-putted the 17th and hit his approach into the water at the last to finish in a share of eighth place. Singh, who won the Volvo Masters and China Open in 2006, has finished second twice this year. "I've knocked on the door a few times and at last it opened," he said. He made a total of 14 birdies and an eagle on the first two days but was unable to break par in the final round. "I was trying to make birdies but they wouldn't go in," he said. "Shooting even par on the last day it's tough to win and Simon put up a great fight, but I think the golfing gods were looking out for me. They did not want a play-off with the bad weather forecast!"
