Sweden's Annika Sorenstam won the 71st title of her career when she beat American Paula Creamer in a play-off for the LPGA Stanford International. The former world number one beat Creamer with a par at the first extra hole after both players ended on eight under in Florida. Creamer fired a final-round 69, while Sorenstam, who began the day with a one-stroke lead, shot 70. The 37-year-old Sorenstam also won the season opener in Hawaii. She moved to within 17 wins of Kathy Whitworth's all-time LPGA victory record by winning her 48th title when at least sharing the lead entering the final round. | I'm very relieved and happy and excited at the same time |
Australian Karrie Webb fired a stunning seven-under-par 64 to threaten the leaders but settled for a share of third with South Korean Young Kim on seven under. Japan's Momoko Ueda was fifth on five under after a final-round 71. World number one Lorena Ochoa of Mexico was an absentee after winning four tournaments in consecutive weeks. "I'm very relieved and happy and excited at the same time," Sorenstam said. "I thought it was a good day today. I thought I played very well and so did Paula. "She played excellent. It took 19 holes to separate us. Fortunately, this time, it was my turn and I'm going to cherish this moment." Creamer said: "It's very disappointing. But at the same time, I'm going against one of the best players in the world ever to play golf. There's a lot to learn from that."
