Donald, who won the event when it was held at nearby Mirasol in 2006, fired a bogey-free round to finish one stroke clear of fellow Englishman Brian Davis. "It was a very good round. I played pretty consistently," said Donald.
"I did a lot of good things around the greens and when I had my chances I took them," added the 30-year-old.
Among the highlights of Donald's round was his tee shot to two feet on the 179-yard 15th to set up a birdie.

And a pitch to four feet on the 604-yard 18th set up another birdie for his lowest round on the PGA tour for over a year.
Davis birdied the first, had six straight pars and then a run of four birdies in eight holes to move into second place.
Justin Rose finished eight shots off the lead with a two-over-par 72.
