The Welshman ended with a 72 to fall three shots off the lead on five under.
South African Omar Sandys led the way on eight under after a second 68 while England's Lee Slattery was second, two shots back, after a 65.
Ernie Els was among the group tied for third on five under, with England's Richard Bland and John Bickerton.
World number five Els said: "I played really well - I really played well with seven birdies. The bogeys that I made were really soft.
"I'm really just disappointed bogeying the last, so not too happy."
Sandys, a 30-year-old from the Free State who is unknown on the world stage, said consistency had been the key to his second 68 in a row.
"I stuck to my routine. This is a golf course where, because of all the trouble off the fairways, you need to be disciplined in your shotmaking and your course management and I was today," he said.
