Van de Velde skipped qualifying for the Open for health reasons |
Jean Van de Velde is poised to make his return from a two-month lay-off at the European Masters at Crans in Switzerland next week. The 41-year-old, who last played in June, began feeling ill five months ago and even had a scan for bone cancer.
"It's thought that he'd been suffering from ME (myalgic encephalomyelitis)," said manager Jamie Cunningham.
"Everything seems to be heading in the right direction and all being well, he'll be back next week."
The Frenchman, most famous for his last-hole collapse at the 1999 Open at Carnoustie, was forced to miss the qualifying event for this year's Open because of his mystery illness.
He began feeling ill in the spring and was physically sick on the course several times, including at the Welsh Open, but despite numerous tests and visits to the doctor, it was unclear what the problem was.
Van de Velde eventually shrugged off his Carnoustie calamity, when he triple-bogeyed the last to slip back into a play-off, with victory in the 2006 Madeira Island Open.
