Storm surges to shock USPGA lead
By Rob Hodgetts

Graeme Storm
Storm won his maiden Tour title in last month's French Open
England's Graeme Storm surged to an opening five-under 65 to take the lead in his maiden USPGA Championship at Southern Hills Country Club.

This year's French Open winner edged two shots clear of American John Daly, who brought back memories of his 1991 triumph with a 67.

Arron Oberholser, Woody Austin and Stephen Ames shot 68 but Tiger Woods leaked two late bogeys for one over.

Open champion Padraig Harrington and England's Lee Westwood carded 69.

Storm ignored the stifling 38C (100F) heat and humidity in Tulsa to pick up four birdies in his opening seven holes, and he added to his haul at the 11th before parring his way home.

"I don't know where that came from," said Storm, who worked at a cake factory during the off season to fund his early years on tour.

John Daly
I would rather make a bad score being aggressive than a bad score playing conservative

John Daly

"I've been really struggling the last few weeks. Maybe a bit of fatigue came in after the French Open. I haven't had time to reflect on it.

"I had no expectations coming into this week. I shot 18 over last week so I just decided to forget technique, forget everything.

"I'm ecstatic. Any time you shoot a score like that in a major is unbelievable, an amazing feeling."

The 41-year-old Daly, who also won the 1995 British Open, edged to four under after the 13th, but handed a shot back at the 16th.

The big-hitting American, who last won at the Buick Invitational in 2004, achieved his score despite not playing a practice round at Southern Hills.

"I mainly did it because I didn't want to have any expectations," said Daly, who has missed nine cuts this year.

"I've been hitting it good. I just haven't been able to score. I haven't played badly. I feel like I'm hitting the ball well."

Woods said of the colourful Daly: "We all know JD is extremely talented. Once he gets going, he gets going. He plays very aggressively."

Angel Cabrera
US Open champion Cabrera ran up a 10 on the short 6th

In the Open at Carnoustie last month, Daly was five under through 11 holes of his opening round but carded 74, 76 to miss the cut.

Daly, who only qualified for the 1991 USPGA at Crooked Stick as ninth reserve, added: "I would rather make a bad score being aggressive than a bad score playing conservative.

"This was a gift from me to myself and hopefully to my golf. Hopefully I can continue to do it the rest of the week.

"I've got to come out tomorrow and keep the same swing thoughts and make the same putts, hopefully keep getting more and more confidence and try to salvage this year."

Retief Goosen, Open runner-up Sergio Garcia and England's Justin Rose were on level par, Ernie Els, Colin Montgomerie and Luke Donald ended two over and Phil Mickelson slipped to three over with three bogeys on the back nine.

World number two Jim Furyk and Fiji's Vijay Singh finished five over and Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke carded a 77.

US Open champion Angel Cabrera suffered an aberration at the short 6th, running up a 10 after hitting his tee shot out of bounds and then finding water with his second.

The Argentine amassed an 11-over round of 81, the same as countryman Andres Romero, who led the Open with two holes to go before crumbling at Carnoustie and finished tied sixth at the WGC Invitational last week.
