Faldo shares lead at Senior Open
Nick Faldo
Faldo missed the cut at last week's Open at Carnoustie

FIRST ROUND LEADERBOARD:
(GB& Irl unless stated)
-3 G J Brand, N Faldo, N Job, D Stockton (US)
-2 M Hatalsky (US), B Heuchan (Can), S Hoch (US), L Nielsen (US), S Torrance, D Watson (Zim)

Nick Faldo made an immediate impression in his first event in the senior ranks, taking a share of the lead in the Senior British Open at Muirfield.

The 50-year-old, who won two of his Open titles at the East Lothian course, shot a three-under 68, as did Gordon J Brand, Nick Job and Dave Stockton.

"I was very surprised," said Faldo. "I was trying to do the best I could, trying to find a routine.

"I was able to do it and that scared me. I didn't know what to do."

The six-time major winner carded six birdies while dropping three shots, and added: "I've got to learn to deal with the different feelings playing this game, which I haven't had in a long time.

"I played solid that back nine - it's a little tougher. I made a mess of 17 and hit a great shot into the last.

"So I feel I squeezed out of the course and gave back what was about right, so that's pretty good."

Scotland's Sam Torrance was hot on the heels of the leaders in front of his home crowd after a two-under 69 saw him share fifth place, while Ireland's Mark McNulty and Des Smyth were a shot further back.
