World number 320 Gregory Havret beat number three Phil Mickelson at the first hole of a sudden-death play-off to win the Scottish Open.

Mickelson (69) and Frenchman Havret (68) had finished tied on 14 under, one ahead of Ernie Els at Loch Lomond.

The American hit a wayward drive into the bushes and ended up taking four shots to find the green.

And Havret, who got up and down from a greenside bunker for his par four, clinched a spot in this week's Open.

The 30-year-old, who has never played in a major before, also won a first prize of 500,000.

Els, five behind overnight leader Mickelson, came roaring into contention by playing eight holes around the turn in six under.

Joint fourth were Luke Donald after a 64, Els' compatriots Louis Oosthuizen and Richard Sterne and Swede Pelle Edberg.

At least, for Mickelson, second place was a vast improvement on his last two starts - both missed cuts after he injured a wrist practising for the US Open.

"Greg played very solid golf and I played very erratic golf," he said. "I made birdies and bogeys; he played steady and ultimately that won out.

"The back nine was a fight for me, but when he plays solid like that not only does he deserve to win, but he makes himself very tough to beat."

Havret was one behind with a round to go, with one bookmaker saying the trophy should have been presented to him before he teed off.

The former French amateur champion had enormous stroke of luck on the seventh when his chip was probably going off the green but it hit the flag at speed and dropped in.

Havret took advantage of Mickelson fluffing a chip on the 13th, driving left on the 16th, right on the 18th and then left into the edge of the loch in the play-off.

"I was really pleased with the last three days," the Frenchman told BBC Sport afterwards.

"I knew today would be awesome whatever the result. It was awesome playing with Phil - it's a dream."
