Gareth Shaw clinched victory with a birdie on the 18th |
Gareth Shaw holed a five-foot putt on the final hole to win the Magners North of Ireland Championship at Royal Portrush for a second time. The birdie on the 18th gave the 2005 champion from Lurgan a one hole victory over Shane Lowry of Esker Hills in Friday afternoon's decider.
"My putting let me down all week but it came good when I needed it," he said.
Shaw recorded a 4&3 win over Cian Curley in the semi-finals while Lowry saw off Richard Kilpatrick 3&2.
"After being left out of the Ireland team for the European Championships last week I had a point to prove to myself - to come out here and win," added Shaw.
"My game was not in the best of order in the first two days but really came round in the last couple of days."
