Poulter tidy from tee to green but could hardly buy a putt |
Ian Poulter recovered from a front-nine wobble to post a respectable two-over 72 that could have been much better. The 31-year-old Englishman dropped four shots in five holes from the 5th but then carded eight pars and a birdie at the last to finish on 11 over par.
Poulter, however, was disappointed with his score as his excellent iron play was let down by some poor putting.
"I played awesome today. I did the job I wanted to do but unfortunately only converted two birdie putts," he said.
"I only missed two greens but I made four bogeys."
Poulter, who was dressed in the yellow and black of the local NFL team the Pittsburgh Steelers, needed 32 putts on Saturday, three more than he took during Friday's 77.
When asked how the course was playing, the Hitchin-born golfer said the conditions were noticeably easier than they had been on Friday.
"It's pretty good," he said. "Somebody will go out and post a score today.
"The 17th is tricky but most of the pins, especially on the back nine, are pretty accessible, providing you find the fairway.
"In some ways it was too fair. I would have liked to have seen it harder the way I was striking the ball today as I would have climbed further up the leaderboard."
One shot better off than the flamboyant Englishman is Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell. The Portrush man carded a five-over 75 that included an eagle-two at the 17th to stand eight shots off the overnight lead.
