Montgomerie has finished second three times at the US Open |
Colin Montgomerie's 2007 US Open bid got off to a poor start at the course where he finished runner-up when the event was last played here in 1994. That year he lost in a play-off on Monday but this year he will have his work cut out to make the weekend.
The 43-year-old Scot double-bogeyed the last to complete a sloppy six-over 76.
But he was not the only big name to struggle at Oakmont on Thursday as his score was matched by Chris DiMarco, Retief Goosen and Zach Johnson.
Goosen, a two-time US Open champion, was another to double-bogey the 18th, while Masters champion Johnson bogeyed his last three holes.
Sergio Garcia fared even worse. The world number 12 had two double bogeys and three bogeys in outward nine of 42.
The 27-year-old Spaniard dropped two more shots coming home to sign for a nine-over 79, 11 shots off the clubhouse lead.
