Memories of Augusta glory for Woosnam are increasingly distant |
Former winner Ian Woosnam withdrew before the start of the Masters on Thursday after an old back injury flared up. Europe's triumphant Ryder Cup captain, 49, has played only three events this year and missed the cut in all of them.
It is seven years since the 1991 champion from Oswestry made it past the second round at Augusta.
The Welshman complained earlier this week that the ever-lengthening course made his task harder each year.
"Making the cut for me at the Masters now is the equivalent of me winning the tournament," said Woosnam.
"I return to Augusta with fond memories and always enjoy the Champions' Dinner on Tuesday nights but it is a struggle to just get around the extended course now, let alone to compete."
