Dredge shocks Els in Match Play
Bradley Dredge
Dredge crept into the world top 50 in December
Wales' Bradley Dredge caused the first shock of the WGC Match Play Championship in Tucson with a 4&2 win over fifth seed Ernie Els.

The pair were all-square through six holes before Dredge won the seventh, 11th, 14th and 16th.

Dredge's next opponent will be Ian Poulter, who reached the second round with a 5&4 win over Bart Bryant.

Darren Clarke lost to Sergio Garcia but a 40-foot eagle putt at the 19th helped Padraig Harrington beat Lee Westwood.

Dredge admitted his match with Els took its time getting going.

"We were both pretty slow on the front nine getting going," said the 33-year-old.

"Ernie missed a few putts, which is unlike him, and then I managed to take advantage of that and hit a few nice shots and hole a few putts when I needed.

"As a professional, I've hardly played matchplay golf. The only time I get to play is for 20 quid at my home course against a few friends."

Clarke was edged out by his Ryder Cup team-mate Garcia in a contest where there was never more than one hole between the players in the contest.

Clarke, the 2000 champion, was one up after 16 but he was unable to match Garcia's winning birdie on the penultimate hole.

Both players parred the 18th but Garcia's birdie at the first extra hole earned him a second-round tussle with Charles Howell, who beat Stuart Appleby 4&3.

Justin Rose also claimed a notable win, 6&5 over Michael Campbell.

Other big names who reached the second round included Vijay Singh, who beat John Rollins 4&3, Jose Maria Olazabal, who beat Paul Goydos at the 19th, and Luke Donald, who saw off Miguel Angel Jimenez 3&1.

The event features the world's top 64, with world number 65 JJ Henry replacing Charl Schwartzel who withdrew.

Henry's reward was to face Tiger Woods, who is going for an eighth straight US Tour title, and the world number one eased to victory 3&2.
