Davis finished three shots behind the winner Putnam |
England's Brian Davis claimed a place in the Open Championship after a superb second-round 65 at the US qualifying event at Oakland Hills, Detroit. Trailing well down the field on four over after an opening 74, the Londoner charged up to joint fourth and qualified with two strokes to spare.
The only other European to win an Open spot was Swede Anders Hultman, who tied with Davis and American Matt Kuchar.
Michael Putnam won the event with Ryan Moore and John Senden tied for second.
PGA Tour winners Jerry Kelly and Sean O'Hair will also be at Carnoustie from 19-22 July, as will Duffy Waldorf, Spencer Levin and Australian Mark Hensby, who came through a six-man play-off for the final three spots.
Spain's Pablo Martin failed to win a place, as did England's Greg Owen and Gary Christian, and Swedish trio Jesper Parnevik, Fredrik Jacobson and Daniel Chopra.
Martin, whose victory at the Portuguese Open in April made him the first amateur winner of a European Tour event in history, had a quadruple-bogey eight at the fifth hole of his opening 74 and double-bogeyed the 18th before clawing back three strokes after lunch.
He is entered for next week's Scottish Open at Loch Lomond and will now be hoping to grab the one Open place on offer there.
