Ballesteros expects Trophy scrap
Seve Ballesteros
Ballesteros has captained winning Ryder Cup, Seve Trophy and Royal Trophy sides
Seve Ballesteros anticipates a tough battle when he captains the Europe team in their defence of the Royal Trophy against Asia in Bangkok this week.

The non-playing captain led his side to a 9-7 win in the inaugural match last year and boasts five of the successful Ryder Cup team under him this time.

Darren Clarke, Lee Westwood and Paul McGinley, plus Swedish duo Henrik Stenson and Robert Karlsson, feature.

The Asia team includes Thai Thongchai Jaidee and India's Jeev Mikha Singh.

"Their team looks even stronger than last year," said Ballesteros. "Happily, I also have a powerful team.

"Darren, Lee and Paul are all hardened Ryder Cup campaigners.

This is anything but a gentle work-out - there is a great deal of intensity in the matches and a lot of pride at stake

"And three of the four Swedish players in my team - Henrik, Robert and Niclas Fasth - have also played in winning European teams.

"The fourth Swedish golfer, Johan Edfors, won three times on the European Tour last season, while our other rookie Anthony Wall is an exciting prospect, so I feel we have a very good blend of youth and experience."

McGinley, one of only two survivors from the 2006 European team, said: "This is anything but a gentle work-out.

"There is a great deal of intensity in the matches and a lot of pride at stake - you would expect that from any team captained by Seve.

"I'm glad we have put together such a strong team because we will have to be at our best to beat Asia again this time."

The competition is to be played in Thailand for the next four years to honour the Diamond Jubilee of the trophy's donor, King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

The venue will alternate between the two continents after 2010.

The three-day event, featuring 16 matches of fourballs, foursomes and singles, starts at the Amata Spring Country Club in Bangkok on Friday.
