Wales a shot off pace in Barbados
Bradley Dredge and Stephen Dodd
Dodd and Dredge battled stong winds and heavy rain in Barbados
Welsh duo Bradley Dredge and Stephen Dodd made a good start to their World Cup defence at Sandy Lane in Barbados.

They are one shot behind South Africa, Sweden and Argentina, who shot rounds of seven-under 64 in the four-balls.

Wales share second place with German pair Bernhard Langer and Marcel Siem. England's Luke Donald and David Howell are a shot further back at five-under.

Irish pairing Paul McGinley and Darren Clarke are four-under along with Scots Colin Montgomerie and Marc Warren.

Dredge and Dodd raced to the turn in 31 in the first day's fourballs with five birdies and no bogeys, despite strong winds and occasional heavy downpours.

Dodd said: "We are a little disappointed because we had a few chances on the back nine but, on the whole, we're satisfied."

Donald and Howell, second behind Wales last year in Portugal, were only one under par after 10 holes before a late rush sparked by Howell's brilliant approach on the 11th.

Howell said: "We played some okay stuff on the front nine but didn't hole any putts and never really got any momentum.

"Then I hit it stiff on the 11th and that gave us some impetus. Our job today was to stay in touch with the leaders and we've done that."
