Padraig Harrington joined Tiger Woods at the top of the Phoenix Open standings despite both players hitting over-par third rounds.
Woods birdied the final hole for a two-over 72 while Harrington fired a 71 to join him on six under.
Harrington could already have been clear at that stage but suffered two late bogies as rain lashed the course.
"It was a huge way to escape the day, to end up tied with all the things that happened today," said Woods.
606 DEBATE: Who will win in Japan?
Woods and Harrington were two shots ahead of Shingo Katayama (71), with fellow Japanese Takuya Taniguchi (68) another shot back.
Woods' only high points were consecutive birdies at the 4th and 5th holes.
On the 2nd he drove behind a tree and had to chip out for bogey, while he double-bogeyed the 7th, where his approach plugged in a bunker forcing him to play away from the hole.
Justin Rose's round came apart with a triple bogey on the 17th that left him four strokes off the pace after a 72.
