Paula Creamer shot an eight-under 64 to lead by two after the first round of the LPGA Tournament of Champions.
Mexico's Lorena Ochoa, Liselotte Neumann of Sweden and Joo Mi Kim of South Korea formed the chasing pack on six under.
American Juli Inkster was among three players on 67, while England's Karen Stupples is three under after a 69.
There are only 39 players in the field, which is limited to tournament winners since the beginning of the 2003 season.
Ochoa, 24, is in a three-way battle with Karrie Webb and Annika Sorenstam to be Player of the Year.
Ochoa tops the money list with $2.342m and victory in Alabama could be enough to seal the honours.
