Lyle targets 2010 Ryder Cup role
Sandy Lyle
Lyle was Ian Woosnam's assistant at the K Club this year
Sandy Lyle believes his best shot at captaining the European Ryder Cup team lies with the 2010 tournament in Wales.

The two-time major winner was assistant to Ian Woosnam at last month's triumph over America at the K Club in Ireland.

But with Nick Faldo set to lead Europe in Kentucky in 2008, the 48-year-old Scot knows his chances to lead the team are running out.

"What looks good timing is 2010 at the Celtic Manor in Wales. That is the one I'd be lobbying for," Lyle said.

Lyle, however, could have competition in Colin Montgomerie for the captaincy in four years' time with his fellow Scot already a potential candidate.

Have Your Say on 606: Who should lead Europe in 2010?

But Lyle told The Guardian: "I don't have that 10 or 15 years of waiting. I've only got a window of the next six years at most.

"Most of my era have already been Ryder Cup captain. There's not many of us left so I think I've got a good chance."
