Davies has won seven time on the US college circuit |
Wales have selected Rhys Davies, Nigel Edwards and Llewellyn Matthews to play in the World Team Amateur Championship in South Africa (26-29 October). Davies, a former British Boys Champion, currently tops the rankings on the American college golf circuit.
Edwards will be making his third appearance at the event, which will be played on the same courses where he won the 2006 South African Amateur title.
Debutant Matthews beat Davies to win the Welsh Amateur title in August.
Wales will be competing at the biannual event for only the third time since being allowed to play as an individual nation rather than part of a Great Britain and Ireland side.
Their best finish was seventh two years ago, but hopes are high for a better result this year.
The event will be conducted over 72 holes of stroke play, with the two lowest individual scores of each day added up for the team's aggregate score.
De Zalze Golf Club and Stellenbosch Golf Club in Stellenbosch, 30 miles from Cape Town, will be the venue.
The women's championship - known as the Espirito Santo Trophy - will precede the men's Eisenhower Trophy event.
A record number of 126 teams [75 men's and 51 women's] have entered this year's event.
Sweden will be defending the women's title while the United States won the men's title in Puerto Rico two years ago.
