Mickelson spurns Hawaii showpiece
Phil Mickelson
Mickelson endured a tough time at last weekend's Ryder Cup
World number two and Masters champion Phil Mickelson has pulled out of the Grand Slam of Golf in November.

The Hawaii event is designed to bring together the year's four major winners.

But the withdrawal of Mickelson and the fact that Tiger Woods won both the Open and the USPGA means two replacements have been called up.

Based on their results in the majors, American Jim Furyk and Canadian Mike Weir will join Woods and US Open winner Geoff Ogilvy in the four-man field.

Mickelson, who scored only half a point in the United States' Ryder Cup defeat last weekend, is also not playing this week's World Championship at The Grove.

Fellow left-hander Weir, the 2003 Masters winner, was delighted by his call up.

"I'm thrilled about the chance to return to Hawaii and the PGA Grand Slam of Golf," he said.

"It's a chance to compete against the very best players in the world, and I would love to improve on my second place finish last time around."

The 36-hole strokeplay event will take place at the Poipu Bay Golf Course on Kauai island from 21-22 November.

Woods won the title for a record sixth time in 2005, romping to a seven-shot victory over Mickelson after closing with an eight-under-par 64.
