Lehman is expected to be replaced as US skipper by Paul Azinger |
American Ryder Cup skipper Tom Lehman has pulled out of the World Golf Championship at The Grove to attend the funeral of golfing legend Byron Nelson. Nelson, who won five majors and a total of 52 PGA Tour titles, passed away at the age of 94 in Texas this week and his funeral will be held on Friday.
"I was looking forward to competing this week," said Lehman.
"But I felt I had an obligation to return home to honour one of the game's all-time great players and gentlemen."
Lehman, who saw his side suffer a record-equalling nine-point defeat to Europe at the K Club last weekend, is expected to be replaced as captain by Paul Azinger within the next month.
The withdrawal of Lehman means the WGC Championship, held near Watford, now has a field of 62.
