Swedish rookie Henrik Stenson knocked in the winning putt to give Europe a record third straight Ryder Cup win. Stenson rolled in a seven-foot putt at the 17th to halve the hole and ensure a 4&3 win over Vaughn Taylor.
Taylor birdied the first to take a one-up lead, but that was as good as it got for the American rookie.
Stenson turned on the style to make five birdies from the sixth to the 14th and stride away with a comfortable and hugely significant win.
Despite being the man who has followed the likes of Paul McGinley and Colin Montgomerie into the hearts of European golf fans, Stenson played down the importance of sinking the winning putt.
"I didn't know that was the one, but I'm delighted to win my match," said Stenson.
"The team is all that matters.
"The boys have been fantastic all week. To be part of this European team - it's my first Ryder Cup - in Ireland has been fantastic."
