Bernhard Langer rolled back the years at the Texas Open, firing a 65 to move within two shots of leaders Erik Axley and DA Points.
The 49-year-old German, who led Europe to Ryder Cup glory two years ago, holed six birdies to move into contention for a first tournament win in four years.
He finished the second round on seven under, with Axley, aided by a superb round of 63, and Points on nine under.
Joint overnight leader Justin Rose fell back to five under after his 71.
The Englishman, also without a tournament win in four years, struggled to repeat his opening round 64, firing three bogeys and two birdies to leave him tied for 12th.
And Alex Cejka, the German who shared Rose's lead after the first round, also struggled, striking five bogeys in a three-over-par round of 73 to finish the day on three under.
There were no such problems for Langer though, who ended the day as the leading European in a group of five in fourth.
American Paul Goydos stood alone in third on eight under after matching Axley's round-of-the-day 63, while Swede Jesper Parnevik survived the cut by one shot after a disappointing round of 71 left him on even par.
