Montgomerie has struggled since his late collapse at Winged Foot |
Colin Montgomerie made a better fist of things on Friday than he did on Thursday but it was still not good enough to make the cut at the USPGA. The Scot followed his 77 with a 71 but that was still four shots too many.
"I played better today, but yesterday was disappointing - I didn't play very well at all," said Montgomerie.
Among other Brits missing the level-par cut were Paul Broadhurst, Paul Casey, Stephen Dodd, Nick Dougherty, Bradley Dredge and Kenneth Ferrie.
English duo Greg Owen and Anthony Wall can consider themselves unlucky as they tied for 71st on one over par - the top-70 and ties qualify for the weekend at the USPGA.
Tournament debutants John Bickerton and Simon Khan also both missed the cut after finishing on three and seven over par respectively.
The 43-year-old Montgomerie, who is still chasing his first major title, has now missed three of four cuts in this year's majors and will be concerned about his form going into next month's Ryder Cup.
The only weekend he played in a major this year ended in gut-wrenching fashion when he double-bogeyed the last at the US Open to finish one shot behind winner Geoff Ogilvy.
It was his fifth second-place finish in a major.
But at least he can be sure of his place in Ian Woosnam's team for the K Club. Casey's place is still not certain and English compatriot Broadhurst remains outside the automatic selection places.
The 29-year-old Casey finished on three over after a second-round 73 and Broadhurst, 41, was three shots worse after a four-over 76.
Welsh veteran Dodd and England's Ferrie ended on the same four-over-par mark as Montgomerie.
