Having started the season looking like a genuine challenger to Tiger Woods' number one status, Phil Mickelson has lost his way a bit in recent months. "Lefty" claimed his third major title at Augusta in April - a week after winning the BellSouth by 13 shots.
But he then threw away a chance for a third major in a row at the US Open when he doubled 18 to lose by one.
His Ryder Cup record is better than Woods' but still fairly disappointing for a player of his calibre.
Mickelson, who enjoyed a glittering career in college golf at Arizona State, announced his arrival on the world stage at the Walker Cup matches in 1989 and 1991.
A huge hit with the galleries thanks to his aggressive style, Mickelson won his first US Tour event as an amateur in 1991 and has now won 29 times on the PGA Tour.
Blessed with a delightful short game, the Californian endured a nightmarish Ryder Cup in 2004 after being paired with Woods on the first day but was unbeaten when paired with Chris DiMarco at the 2005 Presidents Cup.
