Thorp won the European amateur title last year |
Norway's Marius Thorp has the upper hand in the battle for the Silver Medal, awarded to the leading amateur at the Open championship. The 18-year-old carded a third-round 75 and is one over for the tournament, three shots ahead of Edoardo Molinari.
The Italian, the only other amateur in the field, claimed a 77 and is on four over going into the final day.
Thorpe qualified for the Open after winning the 2005 European Amateur Championship in Belgium.
Scot Lloyd Saltman won the medal last year after firing a birdie at the last.
