The 35-year-old carded 71 for two under and a two-shot lead alongside American Pat Hurst (71).

Korea's Shi Hyun Ahn and American teenagers Michelle Wie and amateur Jane Park were locked at level par.

Wales' Becky Morgan stayed in contention at four shots off the lead after a 74 took her to two over.

With Thursday's play having been abandoned due to fog, the players now face a 36-hole marathon on Sunday.

"It's going to be a long day, but I'm very happy with the way things have gone so far," said Sorenstam, the champion from 1995 and 1996.

"I must say that I've been lucky with the tee times this week. I had a late one on Thursday so didn't have to hang around and then I was off early today and so will have more time to rest before tomorrow. I'm lucky, I really am."

World number one Sorenstam, who has won just once this season, remained on course for a third US Open with 14 pars, two bogeys and two birdies.

Hurst and Wie, meanwhile, were among those forced to hang around the clubhouse for about nine hours on Thursday before play was ruled out, and they finished about 1900 local time on Saturday - some six hours after Sorenstam.

The 16-year-old Wie, who carded a mixed bag of three birdies, a bogey, a double-bogey, was tied for the lead going into the final round last year but collapsed with an 82.
