Torrance clinched his 37th career title as a professional |
Sam Torrance will fly to the United States for the first senior major of the season in confident mood after victory in the Italian Seniors Open. The former Ryder Cup captain, 52, fired a closing 67 for 11 under to hold off Ireland's Eamonn Darcy, the runner-up for the second year in a row.
It was Torrance's fifth title on the European Seniors Tour and his 37th victory as a professional.
The Scot will now play the US Senior PGA instead of going to Wentworth.
"I was entered into the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, which is where I live, and I have played there for 35 years, but I chose to go the US PGA Seniors because I think I have a chance of winning that," said Torrance.
"This victory puts me in great heart for that and lays down a marker in my bid to retain the European Seniors Tour Order of Merit."
The 67th US Seniors PGA takes place at Oak Tree Golf Club in Edmond, Oklahoma.
