Paul Broadhurst extended his lead to two shots after shooting a 69 in the second round of the Portuguese Open at the Le Meridien Penina course. The defending champion, who equalled the course record in his opening round, hit six birdies but also dropped three shots and now stands at 11 under.
Frenchman Christian Cevaer lies second with Sweden's Christian Nilsson third.
Former Open champion Paul Lawrie kept himself in contention with a two-under 70 that leaves him five shots behind.
Broadhurst said he was "delighted" to be out in front but admitted he had struggled to keep his round together.
"It felt like a visit to the dentist's out there. It was tough," said the 40-year-old.
"You have a feeling when you are not in control, and I did not feel in control. But I persevered, and my short game got me out of trouble."
