Korea's Jeong Jang stretched her overnight lead to four shots after the second round of the Women's British Open at Royal Birkdale.

Jang fired a 66 in calm conditions to reach 10 under with Swedish amateur Louise Stahle in second after a 65 and American Christie Kerr (66) five under.

Pat Hurst (65) shot to four under with Moira Dunn, Sweden's Liselotte Neumann and Australian Karrie Webb three under.

Annika Sorenstam ended two under with American amateur Michelle Wie, 15.

The diminutive Jang, 25, said: "Ten-under is my best ever halfway total and now I just have to go out and play my own game over the weekend.

I have to straighten a few things out for the weekend
Annika Sorenstam

"But it will be hard. This course, it's kind of scary so I have to pay attention.

"My caddie (American Les Luark) has been great. He tells me not to look at leaderboards and keeps making funny stories to help me relax."

World number one Sorenstam, who is chasing her third major of the year and 10th overall, picked up just three birdies for her 69.

"I hit 16 greens and I am very happy about that," she said. "But I have to straighten a few things out for the weekend. I'm hitting good shots but I can't seem to get them close so I have to figure that out."

Wie mixed seven birdies with two bogeys in her 67 in starkly contrasting weather to Thursday's wind and rain.

"Conditions were so much better," Wie said. "A lot less windy and really nice. It was a lovely day.

"We still have two more days and there's a lot happening, and a lot that's going to happen. I'm just really happy with how I played today.

"But it could have been better. I missed quite a few putts out there."

Defending champion Karen Stupples, of England, shot 71 to finish at one over alongside Wales' Becky Morgan, whose 66, completed in torrential rain, made amends for her opening 79.

English veteran Laura Davies was a further shot back after a round of 70.

Stahle, 20, who won her second straight British Amateur Championship a month ago, is leaving Arizona State University after a year to turn pro next week.
