Retief Goosen and Anders Hansen made late charges to share the second round lead at the Dubai Desert Classic. Goosen, celebrating his 37th birthday, eagled the 18th to card a five-under 67 while Hansen sunk nine birdies for an impressive 63 to also move to 13 under.
Tiger Woods fired a 66 and is two shots behind alongside England's Nick Dougherty and Richard Green.
Defending champion Ernie Els climbed to 10 under but Colin Montgomerie missed the cut after a second round of 74.
The European Order of Merit winner finished on four over par and his pair of birdies could not erase the damage done by two bogeys and a double-bogey.
Europe's Ryder Cup captain Ian Woosnam was also well short of the cut as he struggled to seven-over par.
Fellow Welshman Jamie Donaldson, joint overnight leader with Goosen and Green, slipped back to joint sixth with Els after a two-under-par 70.
Goosen tied for the lead after sinking a tricky 20-foot birdie putt at the final hole.

Afterwards the South African revealed he had struggled to concentrate on the course after one of his children was involved in a car accident in London on Thursday.
His three-year-old son escaped unharmed but Goosen did not sleep well overnight.
"It was only last night that my wife told me about the accident, which happened at lunchtime.
"Luckily there were no injuries to anybody, they were all in a good car, but it's still not nice. It was something I was a bit worried about.
"I got off to a very slow start on the front nine and the good birdies at five and eight sort of got me going again."
Hansen felt luck was on his side as he did not drop a single shot in Dubai.
"I just felt I couldn't go wrong," said the Dane, who has only won once on the Tour during his 11-year career.
"All of a sudden, everything seemed to go in."
Els set a new record of 70 successive European Tour cuts and, after a slow start, he rocketed up the leaderboard with an eagle at the last.
Woods, who is trying to win the title at the third attempt, twice found the water but made amends with eight birdies and an eagle.
He had opened well with an eagle at the par-five 10th - his first hole at the Emirates Golf Club.
The 30-year-old blotted his card with a bogey when he hit into the water at the 18th before doing likewise at the fourth.
"I turned a great round into a round. It's frustrating, but I am in position for the weekend," said the world number one.
