Woosnam stumbled with three successive bogeys but fought back with four birdies to finish on seven under par.

Overnight leader Alessandro Tadini shot a three-over-par round of 72 as strong winds made for difficult scoring.

Miguel Angel Jimenez, Jose Manuel Lara, Jean-Francois Lucquin, are also one shot off the pace at the Celtic Manor.

Tadini had a two-shot lead going into the third round but had three bogeys and a double bogey in an outward nine of 39.

But he came home in 33, with birdies at the 13th and 14th to retain the overall lead.

Woosnam has not won a strokeplay event since the PGA Championship at Wentworth in 1997.

But the Ryder Cup captain showed great character after his poor start and is determined to capitalise in his final round.

"Winning is the goal I've had for a long time and it would be such a boost to my confidence," said Woosnam.

"It was one of those days when you had to battle and I think my Welsh battling came out and it was great to have the crowd behind me."

Nick Dougherty and Australian Terry Price posted the lowest scores of the third round, both carding 65.

Dougherty is looking for his second victory of the season after capturing his maiden European Tour title in Singapore earlier this year.

"Overall four under for the round is a great score," said the 23-year-old Liverpudlian. "It was brutal out there.

"I have certainly moved up already and as long as the weather stays close to what it is at the moment I cannot see myself going backwards.
