Kenny Perry boosted his hopes of a second Colonial title in three years with a flawless second-round 63 to take a three-shot lead at the halfway stage.

Fellow Americans DJ Trahan and Ted Purdy were Perry's closest challengers.

The 2003 winner started his round with back-to-back birdies, added two more before the turn and three more on the back nine to move to 12 under par.

Purdy, who won the Byron Nelson Championship last week, moved into contention with a five-under 65.

Trahan joined him on nine under after a rollercoaster 67 featuring six birdies and three bogeys.

Englishman Justin Rose is eight shots adrift after a second successive 68, four under for the tournament.

World number four Phil Mickelson kept his record of not missing a cut this season intact with three birdies in the last five holes to finish with a 69, even par overall.

But Spaniard Sergio Garcia and defending champion Steve Flesch both missed the cut.
