Spain's Sergio Garcia retained his two-shot lead after a one-under 71 in the second round of the Wachovia Championship in North Carolina.

Garcia's steady play in blustery conditions saw him reach the halfway stage on seven under.

Vijay Singh carded a 69 and is among three players tied for second while Tiger Woods is two under after a 72.

England's Greg Owen is four under after shooting a 67 but Ian Poulter and Brian Davis both failed to make the cut.

Garcia carded three birdies and two bogeys on his way to a 36-hole total of 137, which is seven under par.

He said: "I played well but didn't hit the ball nearly as well as Thursday.

"As well as I played yesterday, you always come out there thinking, 'let's see if I can do something similar'.

"But the course was playing a bit tougher today and it was a lot windier.

"Some of those fairways are almost impossible to hit.

"It felt good to go out there and only make two bogeys and make a couple birdies here and there."

Singh made a flawless start to his round and was four under through 12 holes before faltering slightly over the closing stretch.

At the halfway stage, the Fijian is in a tie for second with Americans DJ Trahan and defending champion Joey Sindelar on five-under 139.

"It's gusty," said Singh. "At times you think it's calm and just when you're going to be making contact with the ball, the wind comes up. The ball can go anywhere."

Sweden's Richard S Johnson and Americans Brett Quigley and Scott Verplank are a shot further back at four-under 140.

Justin Rose fired a 74 and is one over while Padraig Harrington's 75 left him two over, but at least they made the cut, which came at 148.
