Michael Campbell equalled the course record as he took a two-stroke lead after the first round of the Target World Challenge in California. Campbell blazed his way to a nine-under 63 to lead from Darren Clarke, while Padraig Harrington is third after a 68.
Tiger Woods and the English pair of Luke Donald and David Howell shot 72s, but Scotland's Colin Montgomerie could only manage a 76 and is equal last.
"I just went out there and played great," said US Open champion Campbell.
"Every fairway seemed like twice as wide, the hole as big as a bucket and the greens seemed to be twice as big," added the New Zealander, who missed the chance to break the course record when he bogeyed the final hole.
"It's amazing how you get to a certain mindset out there and just go with the flow."
Tournament host Woods carded two bogeys on the front nine but three consecutive birdies starting on the 11th saw him get to get to one under, before he dropped another shot coming in.
"I had my opportunities to make some birdies, especially on the 11th for eagle, but I just missed putts," said Woods.
"By the time I built momentum I'd either lose it or I'd build it and I couldn't make the putt."
Clarke made two eagles on his first five holes and was seven under through 13 holes before closing with pars for a 65.
He was delighted with his round as it was the first time in three years he has broken 70 at the tournament.
"Usually, par for me on Thursday here is 82," said Clarke.
