Big-hitting Argentine Angel Cabrera fired a stunning second-round 64 to take the halfway lead at the Nedbank Challenge in Sun City. Cabrera, who started the day on one under, had nine birdies and just a single bogey to finish on nine under.
Overnight leader Darren Clarke is two shots behind after a 70 while England's Luke Donald carded a bogey-free 68 to join Jim Furyk on six under.
Ernie Els added a 70 to his opening 72 and is seven strokes off the lead.
Cabrera had a dreadful start to the tournament when he slumped to three over after eight holes of the first round.
There were signs of a recovery on the opening day when he claimed four birdies in the final 10 holes but there was no hint of the fireworks that were to follow on Friday.
He opened up with two birdies in the first two holes with the help of 12 and 15-foot putts and, although he bogeyed the fourth, he had another birdie at the fifth.
But his charge came around the turn when a birdie at the ninth sparked a run of six birdies in the next seven holes.
His power from the tee was highlighted at the 596-yard par-five ninth where he needed just a nine iron for his second shot.
Cabrera has now played his last 28 holes in 12 under.
"I'm very surprised because I never thought I would set a course record on my first visit to South Africa," he said.
After his opening 67, Clarke admitted he played conservatively in his second round.
Clarke had three birdies in his opening 10 holes but lost his rhythm at the 12th when he scrambled for a par.
At the next he had his first bogey of the tournament after his drive almost went out of bounds and from then on his touch and putting fell away and he was forced to settle for five more pars.
Donald had to wait until the sixth before making his first birdie but three on the way home, including one at the last, put him in contention.
Els, playing his first competitive tournament since July, started the second round with a bogey five but pulled a shot back at the next.
He finished with five birdies in his closing 10 holes but he blotted his copybook with a triple-bogey seven at the 13th.
