Paul Broadhurst claimed his first title for 10 years after a remarkable finish at the Portuguese Open.

Overnight leader Paul Lawrie was one shot clear with Barry Lane when both drove into the trees at the 17th, with Lane taking five and Lawrie seven.

Broadhurst, the halfway leader, leaked two early bogeys but fought back with seven birdies in 12 holes before a third bogey via the bushes at 18.

That left Lane one stroke ahead but he too found the trees and took nine.

"It was an unbelievable finish, of course you hope that nothing like that would happen to Barry, but in the end it is 72 holes," said Broadhurst, who turns 40 this year.

"It's been a long time."

Lawrie's fortunes plummeted at the 474-yard par-four 17th when, after taking a drop from the bushes, he pulled a five-iron wide of the green, left a chip short and took three putts.

Lane's even greater perils on the last hole left the Scotsman with a chance to tie, but after a superb approach to 10-feet he left his birdie putt six inches short.

The catalogue of disaster that Lane endured on the final hole left the crowd, players, caddies and officials all somewhat perplexed.

Having seen his ball lodged a foot above ground in the shrubbery, Lane elected to play and not drop, but his second careered towards the out of bounds fence on the other side of the fairway.

From another horrendous lie in more dense vegetation he shanked over the fence and his dramatic demise was complete.

"I hit the root of a tree which sent it out of bounds," said the 44-year-old Lane after letting a sixth European Tour title slip through his fingers.

"One shot has cost me dearly, but that's golf."

It left local favourite Jose-Filipe Lima in third place after the French-born Portuguese star carded a one-under 70.
