Seve at Augusta in 2003, he, Player and Nicklaus were all 18-over |
Former Masters champion Seve Ballesteros will not compete at Augusta this year because of a knee injury. The Spaniard had hoped to return to the Masters and the Open, the two majors he is eligible for as a previous champion, after being injured for both in 2004.
After recovering from severe arthritis in his back, Ballesteros began training but hurt his knee cartilage.
"Having reached the point where I felt satisfied with my progress, the injury made me give up the Masters," he said.
Ballesteros, who will be 48 during Masters week, won two Green Jackets at Augusta in 1980 and 1983, but missed the cut on 18-over at his last appearance there in 2003 after a second-round 85.
He added that he still hoped to compete this year in the Open at St Andrews, where he won one of his three Claret Jugs in 1984.
